Buying Anritsu Test Equipment? Use This 6-Step Procurement Checklist

I'm the office administrator for a 140-person RF engineering company. I handle roughly $500,000 a year in test equipment orders, calibration renewals, and repair logistics. I report to both operations and finance, which means I care about two things: the purchase order is clean, and the engineer doesn't come back angry.

This checklist is for people like me—the person behind the PO, not the person running the test. It's not a technical deep-dive. It's the operational checklist I run before buying any Anritsu device, especially when the request has a model number like Anritsu MG3692B attached to it.

When This Checklist Applies

Use this when:

If someone asks you to buy "a spectrum analyzer" without a model number, stop there. The checklist doesn't work until the engineering owner defines the exact configuration.

The 6-Step Anritsu Procurement Checklist

Step 1: Confirm the exact model and options

When our RF lab asked for an Anritsu MG3692B, the first thing I did was ask them to confirm the exact part number and options. That sounds obvious. It isn't. Signal generators and spectrum analyzers have more options than a used car.

So I ask for three things:

  1. The manufacturer model number (e.g., Anritsu MG3692B plus any option suffix).
  2. The frequency range or other key spec that the engineer actually needs.
  3. The accessories that must ship in the same crate.

My rule: no model number, no PO. I learned that after ordering what I thought was a "direct replacement" and it didn't have the modulation option the test procedure required.

Step 2: Get calibration and warranty details in writing

The most frustrating part of buying test equipment is that the calibration story changes after the sale. You'd think a quote would have a clear line for "calibration included or not." It doesn't. So I add a line to the RFQ: "Provide calibration expiration date and scope of calibration with your quote."

For an Anritsu MG3692B, the calibration might come as an original manufacturer certificate, an accredited certificate, or nothing if you buy gray market. That's a serious price difference. A "great deal" on the device means nothing if you have to pay $800 for calibration before the lab can use it.

Also get the warranty start date. Some vendors start the warranty when they ship it to me, not when I receive it. That can eat two weeks.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), a claim like "calibration to manufacturer specifications" has to be substantiated. If the quote doesn't say which standard and which certificate, ask for it. The sales rep will know you're not a pushover.

Step 3: Ask about software and license costs

An Anritsu device is the hardware. But the workflow often depends on a software package that isn't in the catalog description. For us, the reporting tool we use—a Magic Max license—was not on the original quote. I only noticed because an engineer asked, "does this include the software?" It didn't.

So before you sign, ask: "What software is required to operate this device and transfer data? Is it included in the base price? Is it a per-user license or a floating license?" If the answer is vague, ask for the manufacturer's product page URL.

This is where I stopped trusting "with software" from a reseller. "With software" can mean trial software. It doesn't mean the reporting module that your team actually uses.

Step 4: Ask about "when was this cable ready for service?"

One of the weirdest questions in our industry is: When was this cable ready for service (date/time)?

An engineer doesn't mean, "when did the installation crew finish pulling the cable?" They mean, "when did the cable pass its final return-loss or distance-to-fault test?" The exact timestamp becomes part of the installation record.

If you're buying a cable and antenna analyzer, make sure the quote includes the report format that shows that field. Some analyzers output a PDF/CSV with "Ready for Service" timestamp. Others need a software option to export it. That's easy to miss.

This was a gradual realization for me. It took a couple of field team complaints to understand that the device purchase wasn't finished until the report could answer that question. Now I ask the engineer: "Does the test report include a ready-for-service time?" If they hesitate, I add the reporting software to the quote.

Step 5: Compare Anritsu competitors on total cost, not list price

I don't buy on price alone. But I also don't buy without comparing. When a lab asks for an Anritsu MG3692B, I ask for alternatives from Anritsu competitors. Usually the engineers push back—they wanted Anritsu and they have their reasons. That's fine.

The comparison is not about "who is cheaper." It's about:

Once I have two or three quotes, I send them to the engineer and let them make the technical call. My job is to make sure that the total cost—device, calibration, software, accessories, downtime—is visible. The cheapest quote can be the most expensive purchase if it arrives with a 6-week lead time.

Small note: I treat every quote seriously, including the $200 accessory order. The vendor who answered my $300 query before the big refresh is the vendor we call first now. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential.

Step 6: Confirm shipping, payment, and return terms

Last step is boring but important. Confirm:

  1. Shipping terms (Ex Works, FOB, DDP).
  2. Lead time in business days, not "2-3 weeks."
  3. What happens if the wrong device arrives.
  4. Payment terms that fit your accounting cycle.

Test equipment is heavy and expensive. I've had a $40,000 crate sit at a freight terminal for three days because nobody told me the shipper only delivers on weekdays. That's a real cost too.

Common mistakes I still see

Ordering the box, not the setup

The device itself is the easiest part of the order. The cables, adapters, case, software license, and calibration certificate are where the problems live. If the engineer says "it comes in a box," ask "what else is needed to make it a working shelf item?"

Trusting the quote without a data sheet

A quote is not a spec. I never pass a quote to engineering without the manufacturer's datasheet attached. If the datasheet contradicts the quote, the datasheet wins.

Ignoring the "ready for service" question

When a cable test report is missing the time of the final pass, the commissioning record is incomplete. The question is simple: When was this cable ready for service? If the analyzer can't answer it, you bought the wrong option. Don't learn that after the install crew leaves the site.

Bottom Line

Buying Anritsu test equipment—or any RF measurement device—is a buying decision with technical consequences. The procurement person doesn't need to be a RF engineer. You just need a checklist that covers the model, calibration, software, ready-for-service reporting, competitor alternatives, and logistics.

When I first started in this role, I assumed a purchase order was just a piece of paper. Now I know it's a contract with the engineers' careers on the other end. Takes about an hour to run this checklist. Saves way more than that in returns and re-orders. And seriously—ask about the cable's "ready for service" timestamp before you sign anything. It's the question that separates a useful order from an expensive shelf decoration.
