Why I Stopped Buying the Cheapest Test Equipment (And What I Tell Our Engineers Instead)

Here's my view: if you're shopping for a signal analyzer—or any test equipment—and you're only looking at price, you're making a costly mistake.

I manage purchasing for a 120-person R&D and field services company. On paper, my job is to process orders—roughly $350k annually across maybe 8 vendors. In reality, my job is to keep our engineers working and our finance team happy. And nothing messes that up faster than chasing the lowest quote.

Take the Anritsu MS2724C, for instance. We needed a handheld spectrum analyzer for a 5G site survey. One vendor quoted us a price that was $1,200 lower than our usual supplier. A steal, right? Not exactly.

The $1,200 savings? It turned into a $3,000 problem.

The cheap unit arrived with an out-of-date calibration certificate—expired by four months. Our lab manager refused to sign off on it. We had to pay for a rush recalibration ($800), lost 3 days of field time (roughly $2,000 in billable hours), and the frustration pinned on me for 'ordering the wrong thing.'

That's the insider knowledge vendors won't tell you. The first quote is almost never the final cost. There's always a catch—shipping, setup fees, certification gaps, or lead times that don't match the deadline.

Most buyers focus on unit price and completely miss the hidden costs.

The question everyone asks: 'What's your best price?'
The question they should ask: 'What's included in that price?'

Here's what I've learned after 5 years of managing these relationships:

With the Anritsu signal analyzer we finally bought? It cost more upfront, but it came with a 3-year warranty, pre-loaded software for 5G NR analysis, and a calibration certificate dated the day of shipment. Our engineers were testing by lunch.

I keep a spreadsheet. Over the last two years, the 'cheapest' option has cost us more in 60% of cases when you factor in rework, delays, and rushed shipping.

Now, you might be thinking: 'My budget is tight. I don't have $10k for a high-end unit. What am I supposed to do?'

Valid concern—but here's the thing: budget-constrained doesn't mean 'lowest bid.'

What I tell our engineers is this: buy the best equipment you can justify, not the cheapest you can find. A solid, mid-range device from a reputable brand—like Anritsu—that meets 90% of your needs and is well-supported will save you money in the long run.

For example, when we needed a best multimeter for automotive diagnostic work, we could have bought the generic $40 model. Instead, I found a Fluke on a short-term rental for critical tests and bought a mid-grade Anritsu for daily bench work. That $300 rental saved us $2,000 in equipment failure risk on a prototype.

Not ideal, but workable. Exactly what we needed.

So, to answer the original question: Should you always buy the cheapest?
No. Look at the total cost of ownership. The price tag is only the beginning.

I'll take a reliable vendor with transparent pricing over the cheapest quote any day. Because when our engineers are testing 5G networks, the last thing I want to worry about is whether our equipment can be trusted.
