I Thought My Anritsu Spectrum Analyzer Could Do Everything — Here's What That Mistake Cost Me

The Day I Tried to Be a One-Tool Wonder

It was a Tuesday in March 2023. I'd just finished calibrating my Anritsu MS2720T Spectrum Master and was feeling pretty good about myself. Two weeks later, users started complaining. Voice calls dropped. File transfers stalled. The network team brought in a proper Ethernet analyzer — an expensive one from a vendor that specializes in Layer 2–3 testing. Turns out, the Cat6a cable plant had intermittent crosstalk that wouldn't show up on a VSWR plot. The switch ports had buffer overflows during peak load. My RF-only approach had missed everything.

The rework cost $3,800 in contractor time plus $1,200 in replacement cables. My credibility took a hit that lasted six months. I still cringe when someone mentions the 'Cisco switch audit fiasco.' I'd made the classic mistake: assuming one device — even an amazing one — could do it all.

What I Learned About Specialization

The Anritsu Spectrum Master is a beast for RF measurements. I've used it to find rogue transmitters, certify base stations, and troubleshoot PIM issues on cell towers. It's the gold standard in its domain. But it's not a network tester. It's not a phone system analyzer. It's not a cable certifier (not beyond basic TDR).

After that disaster, I revised our team's checklist. Here's the rule: Use the right tool for the job. If your problem is RF interference or antenna mismatch, call the Anritsu. If your problem is Ethernet throughput or switch latency, call someone who specializes in that. The vendor who says 'this isn't our strength — here's who does it better' earns my trust for everything else.

To be fair, Anritsu does make a portable network analyzer (the MT1000 series) for physical-layer testing. But that's still not a Layer 2/3 tester. The point is: even within the same brand, specialization matters.

Practical Advice for Field Engineers

I still spec Anritsu instruments for RF work. But now I keep a separate toolkit for networking. My mistake (that $3,200+ credibility blow) taught me that professionalism means knowing when to hand off. Anritsu's own motto is 'Envision : Innovate : Enable' — not 'Envision : Innovate : Do Everything.' There's wisdom in that.

If you're planning a site audit that spans both RF and network layers, do yourself a favor: bring the Anritsu for the radio part, and rent a proper Ethernet tester for the data part. I'd rather explain a line item for two rentals than explain to my boss why we have to re-cable a warehouse.
